  • 1 million new immigrants in 3 years till 2020

Canada has set up the target to settle one million new immigrants from 2018 to 2020. Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen has called this as “the most ambitious immigration levels in the recent history of Canada”.

This magnanimous target has been set up by the government in a multi-year Immigration Levels Plan. It was presented in the House of Commons on November 1. Economic migrants will comprise a major portion of the permanent residents who will settle in Canada.

Most of these economic immigrants will come to the country through the Express Entry immigration selection process. The target that has been set for economic categories and that of Express Entry in particular, will be increased every year till 2020.

This strategy is different from the annual plan which was rolled out every year. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) consulted with business communities and provincial governments before it put forward the longer-range forecast.

It will enable stakeholders to use resources and plan for appropriate service levels.

Minister Hussen made the announcement at a press conference in Toronto, this historic multi-year immigration levels plan will be beneficial to Canada as immigrants provide their contribution through innovation and economic growth. It will enable the country to be at the forefront of the global economy.

As per this plan, 310,000 new permanent residents will come to Canada in the year 2018. For the year 2019, this target will be further increased to 330,000 new immigrants and 340,000 new immigrants in the year 2020.
